Static Remix by Tori Lund
Static Remix is a collage based piece that derives its influence from John Oswald’s 1988 album Plunderphonic. This piece explores the similarities between hip hop and opera as they are intermixed and superimposed upon one another via radio static, as if two radio channels crossed. For the classical genre I sampled the popular aria "L’amour est un Oiseau Rebelle" (Habanera) from Carmen performed by Denyce Graves and reinterpreted it by means of "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. The intent of this piece is to take two seemingly opposing genres of music and reveal their accessibility to each other and to an audience.
