Variations on Silence

by Justin Webster

This composition is a sort of statement against compositional tendencies towards density and complex layering. I have attempted to produce a simple listen, not boring or tiresome, but, in a way, self-evident. It is an expansive piece, principally utilizing different 'brands' of silence. A majority of the work remains at low volume, with large portions being barely audible.

I have transformed the sounds which are used in such a way as to be outside the realm of human experience. Many of the sample sources are electronic devices. Also, many of the sounds are 'microsounds,' or very short clips from larger sounds which have been played by themselves, or reconstructed into novel sonic textures. The focus here is not on the sounds themselves, but in the resolution they bring about as they disappear back into silence.

On the whole, I hope the piece is a pleasant listen. I hope it will be challenging, but not challenging in its complexity. Furthermore, I hope it will feel unpredictable, while leaving the listener with a new appreciation of resolution and silence.
